One thing that I seem to forget as a new mother is the possibility of growth spurts. I have no idea why I always forget. I’m getting better at recognising growth spurts. A couple of weeks ago, Asher had what seemed like a massive growth spurt. He was eating far more than he usually did (40 ounces of formula a day is a lot for such a little guy!), was hungry earlier than usual and even waking in the night out of hunger. When Asher goes through these growth spurts, he craves the milk that we feed him.

I’m doing a Bible study of 1 Peter. It’s been a brilliant study. This week I’m getting an overview of the entire letter from Peter. In my readings, one of the verses that stuck out to me was this one:

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3

Maybe it’s because I have an infant of my own who craves milk, or maybe it’s because God is trying to teach me something. This verse has captured my attention. One way to grow spiritually is to have a craving for and delight in God’s Word, the same way a newborn baby craves milk.

That’s a different perspective on growth spurts.

Just as milk satisfies Asher when he’s hungry, God’s Word can satisfy my hunger for Him. It reminds me how important meeting with God and spending time in His Word is.

I have not departed from the commandment of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food. Job 23:12

What does spending time in God’s Word look like in my life? At this season in my life, it means getting up early—before my son wakes, which means really early! Most days, it’s not easy to get up that early, but I’ve found that if I don’t start my day with God, I won’t spend time with God all day because I tend to forget about that time once my family is up and about.  As I’ve gotten myself into this habit, it’s allowed me to grow in Him. I’ve also discovered that it’s really difficult when I can’t spend time with Him.

God wants you to come to Him first thing in your day!

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
for in you I trust.
Make me know the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8

So what about you? How are you daily spending time in God’s Word so that your craving for Him is satisfied?
