I don’t think I ever realised the imagery of a fortress in the Bible until I experienced castles in Europe. They are huge, seemingly impenetrable, full of strength, heavily armed, protecting all. Some, like the one I posted here, are built high enough on a hill that if the enemy makes it up the hill, they hit a wall.

I’m so glad that our God can be compared to a fortress. His strength withstands anything. He is our refuge. Our strength. God, like a fortress, provides us with help in great times of need. He cannot be moved.

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling.  Selah
(Psalm 46:1-3, New King James Version)
